The Story Behind the Photographs

It has been a while since we did a session with our kids and this week we decided to get a quick one in...so here goes!

Having children, there always seems to be an interesting story behind everything we do, and this shoot was no different. For the most part, I'm generally pleased with the outcome, especially considering the painstaking efforts we make just to get a good shot from each of our kids. While our eldest huffs and puffs, our little one just whines about having to get his picture made. I really don't think they take our photography work seriously yet. Both of them are truly characters in their own right. On the one hand, we have a son who thinks he's cooler than his parents, and on the other, we have a son who actually still thinks his parents are cool. Now I will stop right there and leave it for all of you to decide which is which. I'll wait...

Now back to the blog... =0)

My thoughts behind the direction for this shoot were simple. I wanted to showcase our sons' true personalities, while getting shots of them representing their favorite sport. We also wanted to play on the color of the images, as well, finally agreeing on more of a "washed" look in the final edits.

I think we are all still a bit amazed at the fact that Sean nailed the shot of the "floating basketball". It turned out great! This was the first photo our son added to his InstaGram page and it was an Insta hit! He is coming into his own and developing his own unique sense of confidence and style. I love watching him as he transitions from a quirky kid, to a handsome and very mannerable young man. One who has had several teachers refer to him as, "a likeable leader, who has the ability to influence his peers". Yep, that's the stuff that really makes you proud!

The next shot of our eldest was very endearing... God first, then family, then BASKETBALL, and in THAT order! All else pales in comparison. Those are three things in his life that he always makes time for... right now anyway. I'll embrace it, because I know that very soon, he will be adding a few things to that list.

We drew inspiration for our little one's shoot right out of Sports Illustrated. The shot with the gloves and the attempt to create the word "Nike" was all his idea. This 4-year veteran of little league football enjoys trying to out do his big brother when it comes to just about everything. He reads and studies every book he can get his hands on about football and basketball, including information on players, the colleges they attended, their positions, and their stats, in an effort to engage in conversations about both sports on an advanced level.

Well, what can I say about this photo of our 8-year old? He is Mr. Personality! He rarely shows this side of himself in public, but in the comfort of his own home, he really lets loose! This is who we see, ALL the time... and I absolutely love it! BRING IT ON!

Now back to the debonair one... the final images are photos I pushed for our 14-year old to take. I drew inspiration for this set from the Men's Fashion Magazine. Although he is not very fond of modeling, he has grown to be really good at it, so I continually encourage (ok, maybe push a little) for him to cultivate the gift. We have no idea just how far it could take him. One thing I know for certain is that children will never realize their full potential, without our support as parents. Parental support affords them great opportunities and a wealth of confidence. It is our responsibility to make sure they get it. As far as The Ponders are concerned, regardless of their endeavors, supporting our kids 100 percent is not an option; it's a standard.

Why Photography?

When we decided to dive into the wonderful world of photography, it really wasn't a dive at all, but more of a stroll along the shallow end. Just to give you a little bit of history, my husband picked up a camera for the first time as a teen. It was his grandfather, John Ponder's Nikon. He was following in his footsteps, by taking snapshots during regular church events. Once he entered college, his days of taking photos had ended (for the moment), while he focused on a degree in Business Management, and later getting married and starting a family.

Fast forward to 2007, almost 20 years after he took his last photo, he picked up the camera once again; but this time it was definitely a different kind of experience. Although he was only using a point and click camera at the time, he soon realized the way in which he captured images was a far cry from the simple "point & shoot" shots he took before. He truly had a God-given gift. He knew instinctively, if he wanted a certain angle, he would need to bend into it, or circle around his subject, maybe stand on a fixture above or lie on the ground below, just to get what he saw through the lens to meet with his vision. He uses this ability to adapt to his full advantage. He also discovered he had a lot more to learn beyond using the automatic or manual settings and the flash on his Nikon, if he wanted to create a memorable PHOTOGRAPH, and not just to take a picture.

He began purchasing photography equipment and backdrops and taking online courses, to improve on his technical knowledge of the equipment, the lighting, the editing process, and a host of other skills he would need to be successful. Above all else, he would need to shoot and shoot OFTEN, critiquing his own work, and finding areas of improvement with every single image taken. Eventually, he went from simply liking photography, to living and breathing it. He had found his new passion. He is now well on his way to developing his own unique, innovative style.

Now, as his wife and a freelance writer in my own right, he asked me to join him in this new and exciting endeavor. He felt I had a lot to offer in helping to build the brand. It only made perfect sense! I could carve out my own personal niche in the grand scheme, while still helping him to develop a solid brand and reputation for quality with his photography. I focused on studying creative posing, ways to promote, pricing research, and of course, blogging. We also needed to know the business side of photography, so I tackled that as well, including building client relationships.

We are side-by-side at each and every shoot, which has expanded my role to include directing the shoots, from start to finish. Eventually, what began for me as the title of "Administrative Assistant", quickly transformed into the title of "Creative Director". We love being able to work together doing something we truly enjoy, and even more, we love the responses we receive from our clients!

Here are a few client testimonials...

"I had a wonderful experience working with the Ponders. I loved the locations picked out by Angela. They were fierce & edgy! I can't wait to use their expertise for my daughter's graduation pics. I'm looking forward to working with you guys again very soon!" ~ Sheteka A.

"I recently had the opportunity to work with the awesome husband and wife duo, Sean and Angela Ponder, of Photography By Sean Ponder.  I was made to feel welcomed and at ease during my photo shoot, from the moment I arrived. The quality of the photos was exceptional! I have received many compliments and comments regarding the professionalism of their work. I was quite pleased with my experience. You all will go far. You both are humble and strive to give your best. Your blog niche is, to me, one of a kind. I don't know if anyone else does that, but it adds a little something extra to the experience. You two made me look and feel like I was about to walk into my destiny. You all did an amazing job! Truly, you brought my journey to life!" ~ Millette M.

Introduction to Photography by Sean Ponder

The Photography by Sean Ponder brand is being built by two individuals: Sean, the Lead Photographer and me, his wife Angela, the Creative Director. Our formula for success is based on a foundation of professionalism and being passionate about our individual roles. We believe we compliment each other in a way that is unique to the photography field... he has the vision and takes amazing photos and I direct the entire shoot, from wardrobe and style suggestions, to location, to posing for each and every subject.

We recently did a couple of photo shoots that we were pretty excited about! The first one was a fashion shoot with a very down to earth gentleman, and our primary goal during his shoot, was to pull out that debonair personality and really reveal it in his photographs. The results were amazing!

Our next shoot was with a couple of teens who were on their way to the prom, and wanted a shoot that would yield photos very different from your average prom photography. We did a group shot of several other couples with our lead couple, but our main focus was on making sure our primary subjects were front and center and shined like the stars! We were definitely pleased with how their session turned out.
